About this board game

Match of the Century is a two-player card game with an approximately 45-minute play time, inspired by the 1972 World Chess Championship final between American challenger Bobby Fischer and reigning Soviet champion Boris Spassky.

Set against one of the most celebrated sporting events of the Cold War, the game places you directly in the middle of this historic showdown. You play a championship match made up of a series of quick, intense games, echoing the structure of the real contest while keeping every decision immediate and consequential.

Each player uses an asymmetrical deck filled with cards that have unique effects. These cards let you manipulate your opponent’s mental endurance and influence the outcome of each short game. Success depends not only on the cards you hold, but also on choosing the right moment to use their powers.

  • Designed for exactly two players
  • A series of brief games forming a championship match
  • Asymmetrical decks with unique card effects
  • Mental endurance as a key focus of play
  • Strategic decisions built around giving up advantage to activate card effects

The central tension comes from a difficult trade-off: you must weigh your options carefully because using a card’s effect requires giving up the advantage. That choice can reshape the current game and affect your path through the wider match.

With its compact games, contrasting decks, and historical setting, Match of the Century turns the Fischer–Spassky rivalry into a focused tabletop duel. It captures the pressure of a defining championship while making every card play matter.
