About this board game
MERCS is a futuristic skirmish game of miniature combat for 2–10 players, with games taking around 120 minutes. Released in 2010, it centers on battles between two squads of five, with every miniature equipped with special equipment and skills.
Rather than taking completely separate turns, the miniatures act simultaneously. An initiative and reaction system determines the exact order of turns, creating a combat flow that can shift as the battle develops. This structure gives the game a dynamic feel, with momentum continually ebbing and flowing between the opposing squads.
MERCS uses unique cards for two important purposes: they provide game references and serve as a means of measuring movement or other distances. This streamlined approach is designed to make games faster and reduce rules-lawyering, allowing players to focus on their tactical decisions and the unfolding firefight.
- Skirmish combat between two squads of five
- Miniatures with special equipment and individual skills
- Simultaneous action shaped by initiative and reactions
- Cards used for both reference and measurement
- Support for 3D terrain or provided 2D terrain cards
The game is also flexible in how and where it can be played. A game of MERCS can use 3D terrain for a more physical battlefield, or the included 2D terrain cards for a streamlined setup. The design states that just about anywhere can become a play area, with the basic requirement described as one miniature, one card, and one ten-sided die.
With its compact reference system, reactive turn order, and adaptable terrain options, MERCS offers a focused miniature battle experience built around speed, tactical interaction, and constantly changing initiative.
