Miracle at Dunkerque: The British Withdrawal from France, May-June 1940 board game cover

About this board game

Miracle at Dunkerque is a solitaire wargame for one player, playable in about 60 minutes, that recreates the desperate Allied evacuation from the Dunkirk perimeter in May and June 1940. A two-player option is also included.

Historically based Event Cards drive each turn, creating changing circumstances while German army, air, and naval forces apply constant pressure. You must balance the defense of the perimeter against the urgent need to move Allied troops toward safety.

Allocate Allied actions carefully to organize the withdrawal, create evacuee units, and load them onto ships at the beaches and moles. Naval units travel across the English Channel, ideally carrying evacuees onward to England, while the air campaign and combat forces add further danger to the operation.

  • Manage an evacuation under relentless German pressure.
  • Defend the perimeter while conducting a fighting withdrawal.
  • Move naval units between France and England with evacuees aboard.
  • Choose which Allied units can escape and which must remain to fight.

You cannot save everyone. Every decision forces a difficult choice between preserving the perimeter, creating more evacuees, loading ships, and buying time against the besieging forces. The game aims to capture the tense decision-making faced by Allied commanders as they tried to prevent the remnants of Britain’s last field army from capture or death.

Designed by Hermann Luttmann and developed by Paul Fish, Miracle at Dunkerque expands and refines the design concept of A Spoiled Victory with a larger map, more combat units, actual naval movement, and an air campaign. Its goal is a challenging, fast-playing experience that combines evacuation management with nail-biting perimeter defense.
