About this board game

Mission Control: Critical Orbit is an asymmetric cooperative roll-and-write rescue adventure for 2–4 players that plays in 20 minutes. Set in 1972, it challenges your team to bring the Mercury 3 crew and their damaged rocket safely home after a failed reentry attempt.

Players divide responsibilities between two distinct roles. One player becomes the Aethernaut Flight Commander, while up to three others serve as Flight Controllers. Each Controller has unique tasks to complete, creating an asymmetric challenge in which everyone contributes to the rescue in a different way.

  • Cooperative play for 2–4 players
  • Real-time gameplay with a 20-minute timer
  • Asymmetric roles and unique Controller tasks
  • Roll-and-write mechanics
  • Polyomino path building

The Flight Controllers must complete their tasks to earn the tools the Aethernaut needs. Those tools are essential for restoring oxygen and other critical systems aboard the damaged rocket, so communication and coordination are vital as the countdown continues.

Meanwhile, the Aethernaut player must use polyominoes to build a path before time runs out. The team succeeds only if that path is completed in time and the rocket can be brought home safely. If the countdown reaches zero first, the Mercury 3 suffers a catastrophic failure and explodes in orbit, causing everyone to lose.

With its combination of real-time cooperation, role specialization, roll-and-write play, and spatial polyomino construction, Mission Control: Critical Orbit delivers a focused rescue scenario where every task matters and the clock is always running.
