About this board game
MOD X is an abstract strategy game for 2–4 players that plays in about 25 minutes. First released in 2012, it challenges players to reach an established point total determined by the number of players.
Each player has 14 game pieces and 18 score markers. On a turn, place one game piece on the board while looking for opportunities to create a scoring pattern—or prevent another player from making one.
Every scoring pattern requires five pieces. Players can form an X, a +, or a line, making the board a constantly changing contest between building your own formations and blocking your opponents’ plans.
- Create five-piece X, plus, or line patterns.
- Mark scoring spaces with your score markers.
- Block opposing patterns before they can score.
- Protect your markers from later scoring patterns.
When you successfully create a pattern, place score markers on the corresponding spaces. Those markers are not necessarily safe: an opponent can create a scoring pattern over them on a later turn, causing you to lose them.
The game ends immediately when a player reaches the established number of points and wins. It can also end when a player runs out of game pieces; in that case, the player with the most points wins.
With its limited pieces, vulnerable scoring markers, and multiple ways to build a pattern, MOD X centers on timing, positioning, and tactical interference. Each placement can advance your own score while opening or closing possibilities for everyone else.
