About this board game

Mogul is a 2002 board game for 3–6 players that takes about 45 minutes to play. Players buy and sell railway shares while trying to outsmart both their opponents and the market.

The game features five railroad companies, each represented by four to seven shares. On every turn, one share card is revealed, setting the stage for an auction in which players compete for the opportunity to shape their holdings.

Mogul gives the auction a distinctive twist: players can earn money by dropping out. Choosing when to leave the bidding is therefore part of the challenge, as every decision affects both your immediate finances and the remaining contest.

  • Players: 3–6
  • Playing time: approximately 45 minutes
  • Core systems: railway shares, buying and selling, auctions, and market competition
  • Companies: five railroad companies with four to seven shares each

The last player remaining in the auction gains the right to choose between taking the revealed card or selling shares already owned. This creates a sharp final decision: acquire another railway share or turn existing holdings into money.

With its mix of bidding pressure, share trading, and calculated withdrawal, Mogul focuses on reading the table and judging the value of each opportunity. Every revealed card can change the direction of the auction, making timing and competition central to the experience.
