About this board game

Mombasa (Limited Edition) is a 2015 board game for 2–4 players with an approximately 150-minute play time. Players acquire shares in chartered companies based in Mombasa, Cape Town, Saint-Louis, and Cairo, then propagate those companies’ trading posts across the African continent to earn the most money.

At the heart of the game is a distinctive, rotating-display hand mechanism. During each round, players choose action cards from their hands, reveal their choices simultaneously, and carry out the resulting actions. The played cards move to a discard pile, while cards played previously are recovered for a later round, creating a changing rhythm of available actions.

Company development varies from game to game. Each company has a double-sided company track, and the tracks revealed—and the companies to which they are assigned—can significantly change the course of play.

  • Acquire shares in companies based in four African cities.
  • Expand company trading posts throughout Africa.
  • Choose and reveal action cards simultaneously each round.
  • Adapt to different double-sided company tracks.

This Limited Edition was released in a Holzbox edition limited to 500 copies. It includes the exclusive E1/E2 Company Track mini-expansion, which was never released separately.

Company E1 lets investing players interact with a discarded card. Company E2 allows investing players to permanently have diamond merchants and bonus mining icons for the company. Together with the variable company tracks and rotating card system, these additions give Mombasa a changing structure from one game to the next.
