About this board game
Monsters of Loch Lomond is a 30-minute family card game for 2–6 players about memorising hidden clan inhabitants, taking calculated risks, and keeping Monsters out of your clan.
As a chieftain, your goal is to make your clan safe while gaining an advantage over rival clans. Each player begins with four face-down cards and may peek once at the bottom two. Remembering where inhabitants are hidden is essential, because the cards in your clan determine your score.
On your turn, take the top card from the Open Highland pile and swap it with one of your clan cards, or draw from the closed pile. A drawn card can be placed on the Open Highland pile, allowing its action to be performed, or swapped into your clan without using its action.
Whenever a card is discarded, any player who knows where that same card is hidden may quickly place it on top of the discard pile. This is how cards leave your clan, helping you get rid of Monsters and reduce your total points. The scarier the Monster, the more points it carries, so careful memory and timing matter.
- Witch: lets you peek at one card each turn.
- Evil Priest of Forvie: can stop being evil when converted by the Missionary.
- Saorsa: declare freedom when you have no Monsters in your clan, triggering one final turn for every other player.
After the round, points are counted. If the player who called Saorsa has the lowest total, they win a Victory Token. Monsters of Loch Lomond ends when all four Victory Tokens have been won, while some high-point cards may still be worth keeping for their future advantages.
