About this board game
Musketeers is a card-driven game for 2–4 players, played in about 40 minutes, in which players compete to acquire valuable gems while surviving the Cardinal’s Guards.
Each player receives a hand of Musketeer cards and secretly sets aside three cards as potential rewards for the current fight. A Guard card is revealed, establishing the challenge for the round. Players then choose and reveal a card simultaneously, creating a tense contest of timing, value, and risk.
If the revealed cards’ sum is lower than the Guard’s strength, the player who played the lowest card places a Prison card on one of their Pay cards. If the challenge is overcome, the player with the highest card claims the advantage: they may place a Gem on one of their Pay cards or return one of their Prison cards to the center.
- Set aside three Pay cards before each fight.
- Use card values to compete against the revealed Guard.
- Place Gems or Prison cards on potential rewards.
- After nine fights, convert your Pay cards into silver.
The center area does not always contain the card you need, so you may have to take one from another player. However, a player with three Prison cards cannot add their played card to the other players’ cards, creating an important limit on repeated setbacks.
At the end of the round, Pay cards earn silver, with rewards doubled when covered by a Gem and reduced to zero when covered by a Prison card. The player with the most coins wins. Alternatively, continue playing rounds until someone reaches 100 or more points, then award victory to the player with the highest score. Released in 1991, Musketeers combines simultaneous card selection, push-your-luck decisions, and direct competition over rewards.
