About this board game

Napoleon at War: Four Battles is a 1975 SPI Quad game for two players, with a listed playing time of 90 minutes. It presents four separate Napoleonic battles through a simple, highly playable rules system.

Each battle offers a distinct historical setting and dedicated scenario material:

  • Marengo — Napoleon in Italy, 14 June 1800
  • Jena-Auerstadt — The Battle for Prussia, 14 October 1806
  • Wagram — The Peace of Vienna, 5–6 July 1809
  • The Battle of Nations — The Encirclement at Leipzig, 16–19 October 1813

The core rules comprise just four sides, supported by additional sheets for each scenario. This compact presentation makes the system accessible while covering several major moments from the Napoleonic Wars.

Combat uses a CRT with an Equal Elimination feature. On a die roll of 6, an attacking unit with a strength of 12 and a defending unit with a strength of 2 can both be eliminated simultaneously, unless the attacker has units of lesser strength involved in the combat.

Napoleon at War: Four Battles is also notable for its influence on later designs. The system inspired Borodino, Napoleon’s Last Battles, Napoleon at Leipzig, and many other wargames, making this SPI Quad game an important entry in the development of Napoleonic battle games.
