About this board game
New Cold War is a card-driven geopolitical game for 1–4 players, with sessions lasting about 180 minutes. Set against the major international events of 1989 to 2019, it challenges players to lead one of four great powers in the struggle to shape the new world order.
At the beginning, the confrontation is divided between two blocs: Russia and China form the red bloc, while the United States and the European Union make up the blue bloc. Cooperation between allied powers is important during the early stages, but the game steadily becomes more competitive as the final victory draws closer. Ultimately, only one power can win.
Players use the Card-Driven system to pursue influence across the globe and advance their own strategic plans. Victory depends on balancing several forms of international power while responding to the changing priorities of the other players.
- Gain international prestige
- Dominate the media
- Increase control of countries and world regions
- Manage military force
- Use United Nations Security Council vetoes
- Pursue hidden objectives that guide your path to victory
Each great power brings its own interests to the contest, so cooperation is never the whole story. Alliances may support your position early on, yet every decision must also serve your private objectives and prepare for the moment when former partners become direct rivals.
New Cold War supports three- and two-player versions as well as a solitaire mode featuring a system of bots. Released in 2025, it offers a focused take on modern geopolitics, combining international prestige, regional control, military pressure, media influence, and secret goals in a contest for global leadership.
