About this board game

New York 1776 is a strategic two-player American Revolution campaign game, designed for a play time of about 120 minutes and released in 2014. As the first volume in the American Revolution Campaigns series, it recreates the campaign around New York City and its waterways.

A newly formed American army of Continentals and militia faces a large, highly disciplined British force that includes significant numbers of Hessian soldiers. The British player commands an experienced army and fleet, while the American player must defend Washington and avoid the disaster that historically threatened the entire Colonial army.

The campaign uses point-to-point movement across land and water zones. Commanders enable group movement, and some commanders can move faster than others, creating opportunities for intricate maneuvers and sudden attempts to trap or escape opposing forces.

  • Wooden blocks create fog of war and conceal the strength and identity of forces.
  • Strategic movement leads to battles resolved tactically on a separate battle board.
  • British amphibious landings and waterways shape the struggle around New York City.
  • Militia and trained professionals reveal the challenge of commanding the inexperienced American army.

The British win by capturing Washington, reducing his army, and holding New York City at the end of the game. The Americans win by avoiding British victory or reducing the British army to fewer than 20 strength points.

Quick to play but rich in strategic decisions, New York 1776 asks whether the British can end the Revolution in its infancy—or whether the American player can defend the country and escape to fight another day.
