About this board game
Night Drop: 6 June 44 is a two-player wargame about the first hours of the D-Day airborne operation, with an approximate playing time of 180 minutes. It focuses on the 82nd U.S. Airborne Division’s struggle to regroup scattered forces and secure vital approaches behind Utah Beach.
During the opening night turns, American units have been dispersed by anti-aircraft fire, navigational errors, and premature jumps. The American player must re-form companies and regiments while dealing with flooded lowlands, swamps, and the danger facing isolated paratroopers. Until reorganization is complete, the troops remain vulnerable and their priority objectives are uncertain.
The German player can exploit the confusion by hunting isolated American units or creating even more disorder. However, the surprise of the airborne assault initially leaves German forces unsure of the Americans’ objectives and strength. As daylight arrives and German reinforcements appear, the German player gradually gains a clearer picture and can organize a stronger response.
Once the American player knows the objectives and the strength of the regrouped units, that information becomes a powerful advantage. Attacks against less important locations can serve as a bluff, forcing difficult decisions about whether to defend a middling hex or protect more valuable objectives.
- Randomized drops scatter American forces across the Cotentin Peninsula.
- Priority objectives and German reinforcements create changing strategic pressures.
- The game scale is one counter per American company or German section/company, one turn per hour, and one hex per 400 meters.
- Components include 140 counters, a 34-by-22-inch map, and an eight-page rulebook.
With its combination of uncertainty, reorganization, deception, and shifting German awareness, Night Drop: 6 June 44 presents a different airborne challenge each time it is played.
