Ohanami

About this board game

Ohanami is a drafting and tableau-building card game for 2–4 players, playable in about 20 minutes. Released in 2019, it uses a deck of 120 numbered cards, from 1 to 120, featuring four different symbols.

Across three rounds, players choose cards, pass the remainder, and decide which selections to add to their personal rows. Each player may have up to three rows. A new row can begin with any card, while cards added to an existing row must be higher than its current highest card or lower than its current lowest card.

• Each round begins with a hand of ten cards.
• Choose two cards, pass the rest, then repeat until ten cards have been played.
• Pass to the left in rounds one and three, and to the right in round two.
• Score at the end of every round, with additional bonus scoring at the end.

In the first round, blue cards score 3 points each. The second round scores blue cards for 3 points and green cards for 4 points, while the third round adds gray cards at 7 points each. Players continue building on the rows they already have, making each placement an important part of their developing tableau.

Pink cherry blossom cards provide the final scoring challenge. Their points grow in a pyramid: one card is worth 1 point, two are worth 3, three are worth 6, and so on. With simultaneous reveals, flexible card use, and changing passing directions, Ohanami rewards careful drafting and thoughtful row construction. The player with the highest total score wins.
