About this board game
Omega Centauri is a galactic empire-building game for 2–4 players, playable in about 60 minutes. Across a map made from sector tiles, players develop civilizations, challenge the weakening Galactic Empire, and compete to establish the galaxy’s next dominant power.
Most sectors begin under Empire control, creating opportunities for expansion and conflict. Players earn victory points by claiming sectors, improving infrastructure and planetary defenses, and expanding their cultural influence. The winner is the player with the most victory points at the end of the final round.
Each round, players perform three actions chosen from five possibilities:
- Assemble: Place fleets into sectors with shipyards.
- Build: Construct monuments, shipyards, and planetary defenses.
- Move: Move fleets into or out of sectors.
- Politics: Gain resources or increase fleet capacity.
- Research: Select an available technology.
In the base game, players select and resolve their actions one at a time, balancing long-term development and technology goals against tactical opportunities. This streamlined 4X experience offers strategic planning and direct competition while remaining playable in roughly an hour.
The advanced game adds improved technologies, racial powers, and other elements for a more complex experience. Players must plan all three actions, including their order, at the start of each round, while Reserve Fleet Actions provide extra possibilities when players commit spare fleets and valuable resources.
Advanced Politics also introduces goals that award end-game victory points for pursuing specific agendas. Whether you seek technological or cultural superiority or aim to build an overwhelming armada, Omega Centauri provides multiple paths to victory and a full game experience lasting around two hours.
