About this expansion

On the Underground: The Underground Challenge – London / Berlin is a solo mini-expansion for one player, with games lasting about 45 minutes. It requires a copy of On the Underground: London / Berlin.

Compete against real Underground lines as you build your own network. The map begins with multiple lines already in place, so you must be resourceful with your track while diverting passengers away from the official routes and onto your own lines.

Each turn, take four actions, placing Track tokens or taking Branch tiles as in normal gameplay. After your actions, perform Passenger movement twice. The Passenger visits one or two stations during each movement, and Destination cards matching those stations are removed and replaced as usual.

  • Play as a solo challenge against the Underground’s score.
  • Take four track-building or Branch tile actions each turn.
  • Perform two separate Passenger movements after your actions.
  • Race to reach or overtake the Underground’s Score tile before the Destination cards run out.

Passenger movement follows the rules for multiple-player games, with one important exception. When equally attractive routes leave the choice to the player, choose the route that gives the Underground the most points. If every possible route gives the Underground and the player equal points, any of those lines may be chosen.

If your Score tile reaches or overtakes the Underground’s tile, you successfully complete The Underground Challenge. This compact 2019 challenge turns the route-building and passenger-diversion systems of On the Underground into a focused test against an automated opponent.
