About this board game

Otter is a card-racing game for 1–4 players that takes about 30 minutes, challenging you to play all your cards first by placing adorable critters on otter tummies.

Three otters are available for play, and each one has two changing rules: a number rule on its head and a suit rule on its tail. To play a card, you must follow at least one rule. Follow both, however, and you may continue playing on that same otter until you follow only one, creating the possibility of an epic turn.

Drawing cards is more than a way to refill your hand. You can draw to flip or swap an otter’s head or tail, changing its number or suit rule before you play. This can open the way to larger combinations, although the cards you draw may not be playable during the current turn.

• Race to play all your cards first.
• Match numbers, suits, or both to continue your turn.
• Draw to change the rules on an otter.
• Keep unplayed cards between rounds, then draw until you have 10 cards.

Between rounds, your remaining cards matter. A large combination in one suit may be worth holding onto, unless you believe you can play your entire hand before another player finishes. Playing quickly can be tempting, but using a strong combination too early may cost you your head start in the next round.

Every turn in Otter is a small puzzle about timing, adaptation, and deciding when to commit. The result is a cute, thoughtful race that rewards knowing when to play fast, when to hold back, and when to pivot.
