About this expansion

Pagan: Beyond the Palisades is a two-player expansion for Pagan: Fate of Roanoke, featuring an asymmetrical card game that plays in about 75 minutes.

One player takes the role of the Witch, while the other becomes the Witch hunter. The Witch must carry out a ritual of renaturation before being exposed and eliminated. Nine villagers are under suspicion, but only the Witch player knows which one is the real Witch.

Each turn, both players use their action pawns on active villagers to draw cards, play cards, gain influence, and manage the game’s Gloom. The Witch can brew powerful potions, improve their familiar, and cast enchantments and charms. Meanwhile, the Witch hunter enlists allies, claims strategic locations, and ruthlessly investigates the villagers.

As the first expansion for Pagan: Fate of Roanoke, Pagan: Beyond the Palisades introduces two new mechanics that shape the struggle between the hidden Witch and the hunter:

  • Gloom: This new resource benefits the Witch while it remains in play and represents the Witch’s symbiotic relationship with the lands. Gloom enters the game through Gloom cards and can be increased or reduced during play. Some cards can even break the natural limits of the Gloom on the cards.
  • Cleanse: With sufficient effort and focus, players can cleanse Gloom encroaching on the village. To cleanse a card, remove every last bit of Gloom; once cleansed, the card is discarded.

With its secret identity, opposing objectives, card play, influence, and resource management, this expansion adds Gloom and Cleanse to Pagan’s tense contest of ritual, investigation, and survival.
