About this board game
Panzerkrieg: von Manstein & HeeresGruppe Süd is a two-player, 240-minute operational-level wargame covering military operations in Southern Russia during World War II.
The map stretches from the western border with Rumania and Poland to the Caucasus mountains in the east. Each game turn represents approximately one week of actual time, while German divisions and Russian corps maneuver across the theater. Multiple units can merge to form German corps and Russian armies.
Panzerkrieg combines a focused operational system with a broad range of wartime considerations. Players must account for armored exploitations, leaders, supply, combat reserves, rail and naval movement, airpower, and Axis satellites as they conduct their operations.
- Operational-level combat in Southern Russia
- German divisions and Russian corps that can combine into larger formations
- Rules for armor, supply, reserves, rail movement, naval movement, airpower, leaders, and Axis satellites
- Nine separate scenarios, each depicting an important operation
The game offers nine distinct scenarios rather than a campaign game, allowing each operation to stand on its own. This structure presents a series of important situations from the theater without linking them into a single continuous sequence.
The published game includes the rules, a 22-by-32-inch map board, charts, and a detailed scenario folder. It also includes 520 counters; the OSG edition comes with 500 counters. Released in 1978, Panzerkrieg provides a concentrated look at operational warfare in Southern Russia through its scenario-based design.
