About this board game
Pax Penning is a strategy board game for 3–5 players, with playing time of about 120 minutes, set during the end of the Viking age in Sweden.
The first Christian king of Sweden is working to build a strong, centralized kingdom. Inspired by what he witnessed in the Danelaw, he understands the role currency can play in nation-building—but he cannot achieve his ambition without the support of the local movers and shakers.
Players take on the roles of small kings, local chieftains, and wealthy peasants invited to help shape this new nation. Supporting the king may severely limit your own strength, yet united action could make everyone stronger. For some, the changing political landscape is a chance to establish a family’s place in the emerging kingdom of the Swedes.
- Play as a local power seeking influence in a transforming Sweden.
- Navigate the importance of currency in building a centralized kingdom.
- Consider whether unity can provide strength, even at a personal cost.
- Use marriage as a possible path to power and a secure future.
Every role offers a different perspective on a world in transition. You may already command considerable strength, or you may begin with little and use this opportunity to carve out a place for your family. You might even marry your way into power and secure your future through family connections.
In Pax Penning, the old order is giving way to something new. The end of the Viking age has arrived, and the choices made by Sweden’s local leaders will determine who adapts—and who gets left behind.
