About this board game
Perryville is a two-player Civil War battle game with playing times ranging from 4 to 16 hours, recreating the Battle of Perryville in Kentucky from October 7–9, 1862.
The game portrays the culmination of Braxton Bragg’s Confederate invasion of Kentucky. Players can recreate the historical events or explore an alternate outcome in which the South brings its available forces together to fight the decisive battle Bragg was unable to achieve against Buell.
Perryville examines a campaign that could have transformed the war in the West. A major Confederate victory might have shifted the conflict from Tennessee and the Deep South toward the Ohio River, while undermining the significance of U.S. Grant’s earlier successes at Fort Donelson and Shiloh.
As game number 6 in The Gamers’ Civil War Brigade Series, Perryville uses the series’ revised second-edition rules while focusing on a comparatively smaller battle. Its moderate complexity and compact scope make it an accessible starting point for players who want to learn the system before tackling the series’ larger games.
- One 22 × 34-inch full-color map
- 280 counters representing infantry and cavalry brigades and artillery battalions
- A 32-page revised second-edition CWBS rulebook and an 8-page Perryville rulebook
- Two six-sided dice
- High solitaire suitability, with scenarios supporting solo play
Each turn represents 30 minutes, and each hex covers 200 yards. With its combination of historical recreation and alternate possibilities, Perryville offers a focused way to experience one of the Civil War’s lesser-known major actions.
