Prolix

About this board game

Prolix is a word game for 1–5 players that plays in about 30 minutes. Players score points by creating words whose letters match the Letter Chips currently on the board.

You do not need every letter of a word to appear on the board. This gives you the freedom to use long, unusual, or otherwise difficult words, but only the letters that are on the board score. Even a huge word can be a poor choice if its valuable letters are not available at the right moment.

Each letter scores according to how rare it is and where it appears on the board. After you score, all the Letter Chips move across the board, changing their values and creating new opportunities for future words.

• Use any word you can think of rather than waiting for every letter to appear.
• Score letters based on their rarity and position on the board.
• Watch the Letter Chips move after each scoring turn.
• Interrupt another player when you have a strong word, but risk losing points with a low-scoring interruption.

Turns in Prolix can be interrupted when another player spots a word worth scoring. Other players may also interrupt your turn, while a flipped timer can force you to say a word, adding pressure to the changing letter values.

The letter distribution includes five copies of every consonant except K, V, W, and Y, which occur twice each, and J, Q, X, and Z, which occur once each. With flexible word choices, shifting letter values, and risky interruptions, Prolix rewards noticing the best scoring opportunity before someone else does.
