About this board game
Prussia’s Defiant Stand is a two-player, 180-minute card-driven game of the Seven Years War, recreating Prussia’s desperate struggle against Austria, France, Russia, and Sweden in Central Europe.
In 1756, Frederick the Great’s preemptive strike on Saxony and Austria set the conflict in motion. Prussia faced the combined strength of Europe’s most powerful states, and its survival depended on stunning victories, delaying actions, British gold, and the timely death of Tsarina Elizabeth of Russia.
The game focuses on the period’s emphasis on maneuver for position. Players must manage their cards carefully, deciding whether to use them as commands to move units or as combat modifiers when battles are joined.
- Card-driven commands and combat decisions
- Fortresses, sieges, and supply
- The potentially costly option of winter campaigning
- A “Frictions of War” table reflecting the indecisiveness of allied leaders
Armies include leaders and artillery, heavy and light infantry, cavalry, Cossacks, and fortresses. The countries of Prussia, Austria, France, Russia, and Sweden are represented on the game’s map, bringing the major participants in the struggle into play.
The “Frictions of War” system captures how hesitation among allied commanders could undermine numerical superiority. This historical tension helps explain how the smaller Prussian state resisted its opponents, and why Frederick attributed Prussia’s survival more to the timidity of allied leaders than to his own actions.
Released in 2007, Prussia’s Defiant Stand combines historical drama with difficult card-management choices, making every movement, siege, supply decision, and winter campaign potentially consequential.
