About this board game
Puerto Rico is a board game for 2–5 players, with an average play time of 150 minutes, in which colonial governors develop the island and pursue victory points through construction and shipping.
Each player has a personal board with spaces for city buildings, plantations, and resources. Shared components include three ships, a trading house, and supplies of goods and doubloons. Players grow crops, exchange them for points or money, and use doubloons to construct buildings that expand production or provide other abilities.
Every round, players choose role cards such as Trader or Builder. All players then take the action associated with the selected role, while the player who chose it receives a privilege. For example, the Builder lets everyone construct a building, while its selector receives a discount.
Unused roles gain a doubloon bonus, encouraging players to select a broad range of roles. The governor token moves clockwise, and its holder begins each round by choosing the first role. Buildings and plantations require colonists to operate, making their placement and use an important part of development.
- Earn victory points from buildings, shipped goods, and manned large buildings.
- Keep shipping chips face down in denominations of one or five, concealing exact scores.
- Track visible goods and doubloons while judging when to choose a role that can end the game.
This edition includes 14 additional buildings from Puerto Rico: Expansion I – New Buildings, including the Aqueduct, Black Market, Lighthouse, Library, Small Wharf, and Statue. With variable phase order and a changing supply of role bonuses, Puerto Rico makes every turn a choice about which action benefits the whole table—and who gains the most from taking it.
