About this board game

Railroad Dice: The First Rails is a railway game for 2–4 players with an approximately 90-minute playing time, in which dice are the main component.

Each player takes the role of an investor seeking control of one or more of five railroad companies. The central objective is to construct as many adjacent Railway Stations as possible and attract the most Passengers.

Play takes place simultaneously on two large tiles. These tiles provide the space where players build tracks and stations, creating the growing railway network at the heart of the game.

  • Dice-focused railway gameplay
  • Investors competing for control of five railroad companies
  • Track and station construction across two large tiles
  • An emphasis on adjacent Railway Stations and attracting Passengers

Railroad Dice uses a distinctive tile-replacement method as the tracks grow. When finished tiles are replaced by miniature tiles, the developing railway can continue expanding while the game’s construction area changes over time.

This unusual approach gives the game a notable physical and visual identity. It also places the evolution of the tiles alongside the investment and construction objectives, as players work toward their shared passenger-attracting goal.

Railroad Dice: The First Rails is the first game in a series of railway games built around dice. It was initially released in a cube box at Essen in 2003, with a publication run of 300 copies.
