Reef: Kings of the Coral

About this expansion

Reef: Kings of the Coral is a 2018 mini-expansion for 2–4 players, with games lasting about 45 minutes. It adds two fish to each player’s game board, bringing a new movement and scoring element to the reef.

Each fish begins beside its owner’s board. After taking either available action—drawing a card or playing a card—the player may move one fish to an orthogonally adjacent space. A fish that has not yet entered the board can move into a space on one of the board’s outside rings.

The two fish cannot occupy the same space, and coral pieces cannot be placed over a fish. Their positions therefore remain visible as coral is added, creating clear restrictions on where new pieces can go.

• Each player receives two fish.
• Fish move after drawing or playing a card.
• Fish enter through the outside rings when they are not yet on the board.
• Coral cannot cover a fish.
• Each fish on a scored formation adds 1 point.

When a formation is scored, its fish provide bonus points in addition to the formation’s normal score. Since each formation can be scored only once, and each player has two fish, a formation can provide up to 2 extra points.

With its simple movement rule and carefully protected fish, Reef: Kings of the Coral adds another way to shape the board and benefit from completed formations. It is a compact addition centered on positioning, coral placement, and bonus scoring.
