About this board game
Rights is a card game for 3–5 players that takes about 20 minutes to play. Players lay down cards with different patterns, competing to collect majorities and earn points from others who play the same cards.
Each card played contributes to the developing displays in front of the players. The central challenge is balancing the cards you place with the opportunities created when other players use cards featuring the same patterns. Majorities are important, while the ability to earn points from matching plays gives each card additional significance.
The game ends when one player has eight cards in front of them. At that point, every player adds the three cards in their hand to their display before anyone makes any payments. This timing detail is an essential part of the game and can significantly affect the result.
- Players: 3–5
- Playing time: approximately 20 minutes
- Core play: lay down patterned cards, collect majorities, and earn points from matching cards
- End game: add all three hand cards to each display before payments are made
The English rules have a serious omission: they do not mention the final hand-card addition. Playing without this rule can ruin the game, because the three cards held by each player must be included before scoring payments take place.
Released in 2015, Rights offers a compact contest built around card patterns, majority collection, and carefully timed endings. Remembering the final display step is vital to experiencing the game as intended.
