About this board game

Rivoli 1797 is a two-player battle game with an approximate playing time of 90 minutes, first published in 1998. It is the first battle game in Vae Victis’s Jours de Gloire series.

The game’s central system activates units through the draw of activation markers. This mechanism drives the course of play, making the timing of each activation a defining part of the experience. Rivoli 1797 presents the original version of a system that later underwent several changes in subsequent games.

  • Players: 2
  • Playing time: approximately 90 minutes
  • Series: Jours de Gloire (JDG)
  • Scale: 297 metres per hex
  • Time scale: 75 minutes per game turn
  • Strength scale: 200 men per strength point

As with all Vae Victis games, the counters must be cut out and mounted before play. The rules included with this edition are entirely in French, although translations are available online.

Rivoli 1797 was released as the first entry in a group of Jours de Gloire battle games intended to appear around the 200th anniversary of their respective battles. Players looking for the later form of the system are advised to consult Zurich 1799, which contains the full rules as of the stated reference, or Marengo 1800, which contains the beginner rules.
