Rosetta: The Lost Language is a co-operative judgement game for 2–5 players that takes about 25 minutes to play. One player becomes the author, representing a lost individual, community, or civilization, while the other players take on the role of experts trying to understand a written language.

The author assigns a meaning to an inscription written in a fictional script. The experts must determine what that meaning is, but they cannot simply be told the answer. Instead, they choose a word as a guess, and the author translates that word into the given script.

Each translation reveals more about how the writing system works and helps the experts refine their understanding. The process continues back and forth as the experts make further guesses, interpreting the author’s translations and comparing them with the original inscription.

The goal is to give a word that translates into the original inscription. Every guess matters: the number of guesses becomes the score, and players aim to achieve the lowest score possible.
