About this board game
Rostov ’41: Race to the Don is a 1–2 player Standard Combat Series game, released in 2020, with an approximately 600-minute playing time. It covers Army Group South’s late-fall 1941 drive to capture Rostov and the Soviet counterattack that followed.
Turns represent 3 to 6 days, while the map uses a scale of 2.5 miles per hex. Units range from battalions to divisions, and the combination of a wide-open map and low counter density creates room for fast-moving, highly consequential decisions.
The German player must use limited, overstretched forces to achieve a rapid breakthrough. Capturing Rostov demands speed, skill, and some luck—but success leaves the attackers isolated at the end of a fragile logistical shoestring. The Soviet player must conserve strength while the German offensive loses momentum, balancing the effort to derail the drive against the need to prepare a larger counteroffensive.
Both sides are under pressure throughout the game. Rostov ’41 presents four scenarios covering different parts of the struggle:
- Fritz on the Don — Campaign, 14 turns
- Fritz on the Mius — 4 turns
- Fritz Grabs Rostov — 7 turns
- Soviet Counterpunch — 4 turns
The game includes the Standard Combat Series 1.8 rulebook, a game-specific rulebook, a full-color 22-by-34-inch map, 280 counters, a box, and dice. Its compact counter mix and broad playing area bring the mobile action of the campaign into sharp focus.
