About this board game

Save: South Vietnam! is a solitaire war game for one player, with an approximate playing time of 300 minutes, set during the Americanization of the Vietnam War. Beginning in early 1965, you command the US and South Vietnamese effort as South Vietnam faces growing Vietcong attacks, a collapsing ARVN, and increasing North Vietnamese infiltration.

Your forces battle across the country for provincial control. US and ARVN brigades and regiments confront VC battalions, NVA regiments, and subversive Political Cadres in a struggle that spans Vietnam and eventually draws Cambodia and Laos into the conflict.

  • Play as the commander of the US and South Vietnamese war effort.
  • Fight for control of provinces throughout the country.
  • Face local Vietcong forces, infiltrating NVA units, and Political Cadres.
  • Try to hold Saigon through 50 quarterly turns.

The historical setting begins with the arrival of the 9th Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, at Danang on March 8, 1965. US forces soon deploy to Bien Hoa and other strategic areas, while the 1st Cavalry Division launches a full-scale offensive in the Ia Drang Valley by fall.

Victory requires holding Saigon until Summer 1977, when the communists will be totally spent. But Save: South Vietnam! asks whether the VC and NVA can ever be completely defeated, echoing the challenge faced by Johnson and Nixon before US forces left Vietnam in 1973 and South Vietnam fell in early 1975.
