About this board game
Scripts and Scribes: The Dice Game is a dice-driven strategy game for 2–5 players, playable in about 30 minutes. Set in a medieval abbey, it challenges players to build prestige by collecting resources and turning valuable texts into gold.
Each player represents an abbey seeking to improve its collection of historical and sacred texts. To do so, you acquire the materials needed for manuscript illustration and reproduction, then produce and sell these valuable works to generate the finances required to maintain a fine abbey.
The game features five different categories, and the values of those categories change throughout play. This creates an evolving contest as players gather resources, assess their worth, and work toward becoming the most prestigious abbey.
- Collect scrolls, manuscripts, pigments, quills, and ink.
- Exchange resources for gold.
- Auction resources for gold or gold for resources.
- Compete across five categories with changing values.
Dice rolls shape the rhythm of the game by determining whether a turn brings many auctions or only a few. Players must respond to these changing opportunities, balancing the need to acquire resources with the drive to accumulate gold.
A dice version of Scripts and Scribes, also known as Biblios, Scripts and Scribes: The Dice Game keeps the original medieval theme while introducing distinctive changes through dice play. Released in 2012, it offers a focused competition of collecting, exchanging, and auctioning in pursuit of abbey prestige.
