About this expansion

Shogun: Tenno’s Court is an expansion for 3–5 players, adding imperial diplomacy and new strategic choices to the 90-minute game of competing Daimyos.

The Daimyos continue their struggle over the empire’s provinces while peasant revolts and famines make ruling the country even more difficult. The disempowered Tenno, however, may still influence the balance of power. By seeking his favor through diplomacy, players can obtain valuable gifts and highly rated privileges.

Tenno’s Court allows players to visit the imperial court and convert armies into court officials. These armies can come either from the tower tray or from the players’ provinces before being sent to the court to acquire favors from the Emperor. Every decision carries a risk: competing too intensely for the Tenno’s favor may leave a player struggling to maintain control of their armies.

  • Visit the imperial court to pursue the Tenno’s favor.
  • Convert armies from the tower tray or provinces into court officials.
  • Gain gifts and privileges through diplomatic play.
  • Use the included Samurai mini-expansion with Tenno’s Court or with the base game alone.

The included Samurai mini-expansion gives each player a stack of cards featuring progressively stronger bonuses. At the beginning of a round, a player who controls provinces in at least four regions may reveal the next card in their stack and choose one of its depicted bonuses.

With court politics, army conversion, and optional Samurai bonuses, Shogun: Tenno’s Court increases the strategic depth of the base game while adding new ways to pursue power across the empire.
