About this board game
Siena is a strategy game for 2–5 players, with play lasting about 90 minutes, set in the city of 1338. Players compete above the fresco created by the artist Ambrogio Lorenzetti for Siena’s Town Council, building wealth and influence through the town’s commerce.
Begin as Peasants, sowing the ground and selling your crop along the Via Francigena. Save enough florins and you can improve your position, becoming more comfortably off while trading cloth and spices throughout Tuscany.
But prosperity is only the beginning. Your ultimate ambition is to enter the Council of the Nine, Siena’s government. To pursue that goal, you must become Bankers and use your money to obtain the consent of the Senesi.
- Start by farming and selling crops.
- Progress to trading cloth and spices across Tuscany.
- Use accumulated money to seek political influence.
- Support the artists of the era or contribute to the construction of the new Torre del Mangia.
Wealth alone may not be enough to secure your ambitions. Around every corner, the town holds dangers and distractions created by other players, including beggars, thieves, and pretty women inside the inn. These pitfalls can threaten the florins you have worked to save.
With its historical setting, economic progression, political aspirations, and unexpected hazards, Siena offers a distinctive journey through medieval commerce and civic life. The game’s path from peasant labor to banking power creates a richly themed contest for fortune, consent, and a place among the city’s rulers.
