About this board game

Silverton is a railroading, mining, and commodity-market game for 1–6 players, with games lasting about 180 minutes. Set in the historic mining areas of Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah, it challenges players to develop an empire of railroads and mines while positioning valuable commodities for profit.

Use your surveyor to plot railroad routes and your prospector to search for mines. Players make money by building networks that deliver freight and passengers, while also claiming mines and mills and speculating on the prices of precious metals.

Each turn begins with turn-order cards being shuffled and dealt. In that order, players place prospectors and surveyors on the map. Disputes are resolved when surveyors occupy the same space, then players pay for construction and claims, collect passenger revenue, and deliver and sell freight for up to two claims.

After these actions, dice determine price changes for each mine. Claims and passenger cards are replaced, and the group checks whether a player has met the victory condition for the selected scenario.

  • Build and operate railroad networks.
  • Place prospectors to claim mines and mills.
  • Deliver freight and passengers for revenue.
  • Respond to changing prices for gold, silver, and other commodities.
  • Play across a mounted 17×22 mapboard with scenarios and the New Mexico expansion included in the Mayfair edition.

With turn order influencing placement and payments, timing is central to every round. The 1991 game includes components for up to six players, including colored wooden pieces, price-chart cubes, commodity chips, cards, dice, and a turn marker. Silverton was originally published by Two Wolf and later released by Mayfair.
