About this board game

Solar City is a 1–4 player board game with a playing time of about 60 minutes, in which players design an efficient future city to help heal a polluted world. Set in 2035, the game embraces a solarpunk vision where urban planning can produce clean energy, oxygen, and water.

On each turn, choose one of three actions. Build a Skyscraper to gain profits when it is activated, construct a Public Building to improve the performance of the city, or activate the Vertical Farm to bring the city’s systems to life.

  • Cover skyscrapers in green and activate wind turbines.
  • Release the water flow and install photovoltaic panels.
  • Transform the city into a factory of bioenergy and oxygen.

Every action activates part of the city. The player who triggers that section receives the profits from its buildings and, crucially, prevents the other players from activating it. This shared, contested city structure forces everyone to adapt their plans as the game develops.

Solar City offers substantial variety from one game to the next. More than a dozen building types are included, but only six are used in each game, while the Public Buildings are selected randomly. These changing combinations create a different urban-planning challenge every time.

The game ends after a set number of rounds, determined by player count, or when one player fills their entire board. The winner is the player who has made the greatest positive contribution to the world’s environment by collecting the most Oxygen Points.
