About this board game

South Mountain is a Civil War battle game for 1–6 players, with an advertised play time of 360 minutes. It recreates the September 14, 1862, fight in which D.H. Hill’s Confederate division resisted Ambrose Burnside’s Wing of the Army of the Potomac.

Federal troops from the 1st and 9th Corps attacked across South Mountain, while Hill’s men held their positions for 12 hours against a rising tide of Union forces. The Confederates were ultimately saved by the late arrival of D.R. Jones and Hood’s divisions, giving Robert E. Lee time to concentrate his army in the face of the Federal advance.

As the fourth game in the Civil War, Regimental Series, South Mountain presents a full and intense battle on a single map with a manageable number of counters. The game is designed to be playable in an evening, while its replay value is strengthened by the variable arrival of key Rebel forces and the use of Confederate and Union Random Events.

  • Unit scale: regiments and batteries
  • Hex scale: 100 yards per hex
  • One 22×32-inch map sheet and two counter sheets
  • Civil War Brigade Series, Regimental Subsystem, and South Mountain-specific rules
  • Two Charts & Tables booklets, a Player Aid Card, and two dice

With medium complexity, the game focuses on the prolonged struggle to hold or overcome the mountain positions. South Mountain combines a historical scenario with changing reinforcement possibilities, making each confrontation a fresh test of endurance and timing.

Designed by Dave Powell, with series design and artwork by Dean Essig and development by Bob Cloyd, South Mountain offers a concentrated entry in the Regimental Series for two or more players.
