About this board game

Southern Pacific is a luck-free railroad game for 3–5 players, with an approximate playing time of 90 minutes, set in Texas during the 1800s.

The Civil War is over, and America’s railroads are ready for investment. Six railroads approach Texas from Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma as robber barons fund expansion and compete for dominance across the booming American Southwest.

Players finance the railroads by selling shares. The president of each railroad must decide how to use the company’s resources, balancing expansion with the expectations of shareholders.

• Auction stock to raise money for railroad development.
• Build new track across Texas and beyond.
• Acquire existing track from other companies.
• Pay dividends while deciding how much money the railroad should retain.

Every choice can affect control. At the end of each round, “bull market” auctions can unexpectedly disrupt a president’s position, potentially leading to a hostile takeover. Stock earns dividends during the game, but it has no value during final scoring.

The game ends when one railroad has built all of its track or when all stocks have been acquired. At the conclusion of Southern Pacific, the winner is the player with the most cash in hand, making investment decisions, railroad growth, and control struggles central to the race for victory.
