About this board game

Sovereign: Bretwalda is a fast-paced area control game for 1–4 players, with sessions lasting approximately 180 minutes.

Set in Britain in 796 AD, the game unfolds during the Dark Ages, as Viking raiders conquer land and paganism gives way to Christianity. Four major Anglo-Saxon kingdoms—Northumbria, Mercia, Wessex, and East Anglia—compete through diplomacy, alliance building, and conflict to claim the crown of Bretwalda, ruler of Britain.

Each player takes charge of one of these asymmetric kingdoms. Victory depends on more than military strength: you must control key areas, complete secret objectives, and construct special buildings while managing the resources and opportunities available to your kingdom.

The game lasts a maximum of 12 seasons, and every season allows only two of four available actions. This tight action limit makes every decision meaningful. You may patiently strengthen your economy, knowledge, and diplomatic position, or create a powerful army and move quickly to seize lands and riches.
