Spukstaben

About this board game

Spukstaben is a cooperative word game for 1–4 players that plays in about 20 minutes. Set in an old-school letterpress printshop, it challenges players to protect precious type blocks from hordes of little ghosts.

These mischievous spirits, called Spukstaben, appear at night carrying stolen letters. The game unfolds over ten rounds. During each round, new ghosts enter the printshop and move toward the exit, while some may jump directly toward the door.

Each Spukstabe enters with a level of spook-energy determined by the number of players. The team has one minute to separately create one word each, aiming to include as many of the stolen letters as possible. Those letters strike the ghosts and reduce their spook-energy.

• Use stolen letters to weaken the approaching Spukstaben.
• Save type blocks to earn more points at the end.

Every letter in a word can hit only one ghost, and each word can hit a particular ghost only once. This gives the team an important puzzle to solve: players must coordinate their words so their letters are used effectively against the incoming threat.

The goal is to defeat the Spukstaben and save as many type blocks as possible before the ten rounds end. The more type blocks the players rescue, the more points they score. With its short time limit, shared decisions, and word-based teamwork, Spukstaben turns a spooky printshop emergency into a fast cooperative challenge.
