About this board game

Starfire is a space wargame for 2–3 players, released in 1979, with games lasting about 120 minutes. It simulates combat between starships traveling at sub-light speed, using an unusual system in which each vessel is represented as a word.

Ships consist of combat and non-combat systems, with each system shown by a letter or combination of letters. As one ship damages another, letters are crossed off from left to right within that ship’s word. When the word is eliminated, the ship is destroyed, giving every exchange a direct and visible effect on a vessel’s capabilities and survival.

Movement takes place across an “endless” hex map and is resolved in six impulses. For travel between star systems, fleets use Warp Points that connect systems in a random manner, creating the framework for the game’s galactic movement.

  • Space combat at sub-light speed
  • Ships represented by words made from system letters
  • Damage applied from left to right until destruction
  • Six-impulse movement on an endless hex map
  • Randomly connected Warp Points between star systems
  • Rules for designing custom ships

The game includes scenarios set in a fictional future history, focusing on conflicts between the Terrans of Earth and other races of the galaxy. These scenarios provide battles within the setting, while the ship construction rules support open fleet engagements using custom-designed vessels.

With its letter-based damage system, expansive movement map, and future-history scenarios, Starfire combines detailed fleet construction with a distinctive way to track damage during space battles. The series was later re-implemented by Starfire (3rd Edition), Galactic Starfire, and Solar Starfire.
