About this board game

Sweden Fights On is a two-player tactical battle game with an approximately four-hour playing time, featuring four battles from the later half of the Thirty Years War.

As the second volume in the Musket & Pike Battle Series, the game follows the fall, revival, and pinnacle of Swedish military fortunes after the death of King Gustav II Adolf at Lützen in 1632. The system emphasizes command and control, placing the challenge of battlefield coordination at the center of play.

Armies are organized into three or four wings, and each wing receives an order that limits the actions its units can perform. Victory goes to the commander who can coordinate these wings effectively in the heat of battle. Units include infantry brigades, cavalry regiments, and artillery batteries.

  • Cavalry charges and pistol use for skirmishing or close combat
  • Artillery grazing fire, limbered guns, and double-sized batteries
  • Organic regimental artillery
  • Infantry fire techniques including advancing, retreating, and salvo firing

The four scenarios are Nördlingen 1634, where Swedish forces were drawn into a Habsburg-Spanish trap; Wittstock 1636, featuring Banér’s daring double envelopment; 2nd Breitenfeld 1642, where Torstensson faced a larger Imperial army; and Jankau 1645, a surprise winter campaign in the wooded hills southeast of Prague.

Sweden Fights On includes 772 full-color die-cut counters, two full-color back-printed mapsheets, a ten-sided die, a 24-page series rulebook, a 40-page playbook with Lion of the North conversion rules, and an 11×17 player aid card. Its interactive battles are designed to play through in one sitting.
