About this board game

Sylla is a strategy game for 3–4 players that plays in approximately 90 minutes. Set around the Roman Consul and dictator whose name it bears, it challenges players to compete for the title of premier Consul of Rome.

The game unfolds across five years, with each year divided into seven phases. Players take actions throughout these phases while trying to influence the many parts of Roman social and political life. No single player can control everything, giving Sylla a distinctly semi-cooperative character.

Competition is only part of the challenge. The players must also prepare for negative events that can affect Rome, including epidemic plague, the persecution of Christians, and decadence. Success therefore depends on pursuing personal ambitions while responding to pressures that concern the wider Roman world.

  • Play as contenders seeking to become Rome’s premier Consul.
  • Experience five turns, each structured into seven phases.
  • Balance competition with semi-cooperative concerns.
  • Prepare for plague, persecution of Christians, and decadence.

Sylla was designed with the ambition of bringing together elements associated with Res Publica Romana and Saint Petersburg, while remaining playable in about one hour according to its design aim. The result is a Roman political contest shaped by recurring turns, shared dangers, and competing influence.

The published player range is 3–4, while the Ystari Games website provides downloadable rules for a two-player game. With its combination of political competition and common threats, Sylla offers a focused struggle for prestige in ancient Rome.
