The Border

About this board game

The Border is a 2022 dice-and-marking game for 2–4 players, with 30 minutes of play time. Roll colorful dice, complete hexagonal paths, and surround areas to score points before anyone else can finish six.

Each player has an erasable board showing nine areas. Every area is surrounded by a path of hexagons, with most paths bordering two areas. The hexagons are grouped into six colors, while two white hexagons contain X marks.

On your turn, roll five dice up to three times, keeping or rerolling dice as you choose. Each die has a different color on each of its six sides. When you stop rolling, use the results to mark a complete group of matching-color spaces: four orange results, for example, can complete a group of two, three, or four orange hexagons, but not a group of five.

• Complete groups of colored hexagons using your dice results.
• Let opponents mark one space for each die you leave unused.
• Build from spaces already marked on their boards.
• Score areas when their final bordering hexagon is marked.

When you surround an area, you earn 4–12 points based on its size. Another player who surrounds that same area later receives only half as many points, making timing and competition important throughout the game.

As soon as one player completes their sixth area, the current turn ends. Everyone then totals their points, and the highest score wins. With its shared opportunities, limited rolls, and race to claim valuable areas, The Border turns every colorful throw into a tense decision.
