About this expansion

The Castles of Burgundy: 6th Expansion – The Cloisters is a 2015 expansion for 2–4 players, with a play time of about 90 minutes. It adds five cloister hex tiles that can become part of the regions in your estate.

Each round, one cloister is placed on the central black depot in place of a black-backed tile. The other rules for the black depot remain unchanged. A cloister can be bought from that depot for 2 Silverlings, then placed in an empty storage space in the bottom-left corner of your player board.

When you are ready to use an owned cloister, place it on an empty space in your estate that is adjacent to at least one previously placed tile and matches the number on your die. Like other estate tiles, it must fit the requirements of your current action, but a cloister has no additional function after placement.

  • Add one cloister to the central black depot each round.
  • Buy a cloister for 2 Silverlings and store it on your player board.
  • Place it using an appropriate die result next to an existing tile.
  • Count each cloister toward the size of its region.

Cloisters help complete regions and can make their final scoring value more substantial. A region’s size increases by one for every cloister it contains, although a region containing one or more cloisters can never exceed a size of eight.

For example, a four-space region with two cloisters counts as a six-space region and earns 21 victory points instead of 10. The Castles of Burgundy: 6th Expansion – The Cloisters therefore adds a focused way to shape region sizes while preserving the central depot, purchasing, storage, and die-placement rules.
