About this board game
The Conquerors: Alexander the Great is a 1–2 player historical strategy game with an approximate playing time of 240 minutes, covering Alexander’s career from his accession to the Macedonian throne through the Hellenization of half the known world.
Playing as Alexander, you must do more than win battles. You must maintain your hegemony over Greece, become Great King, and establish your deity while managing the demanding realities of an ancient campaign. Building armies, moving them where they are needed, coping with fatigue and weariness, handling personalities, and adapting to conquered societies are all central challenges.
The game has no conventional turns: play continues until the Macedonian player wins or Alexander dies. Victory requires completing eight separate objectives, including controlling key provinces, building Alexandria, gaining control of the Royal Family, and invoking proskynesis. The Persian player has multiple ways to prevent these achievements, supported by money and manpower.
- Historical events: 55 cards present opportunities and outside events, including mass marriages, assassination attempts, Spartan revolts, drinking problems, and a possible honeymoon for weary Macedonian forces.
- Detailed combat: A two-tiered battle-resolution system considers more than army size, and even victorious forces may suffer serious damage.
- Campaign pressures: Logistics, army construction, fatigue, weariness, personalities, and social adaptation shape every decision.
Cards support the historical situation without driving the entire game, while the rich detail places major burdens on both sides. Designed by Richard Berg and developed by Bill Ramsay, The Conquerors: Alexander the Great includes a 22-by-34-inch map, counters, a rule book, player aid cards, and three six-sided dice. It can also be played solitaire.
