About this expansion
Mamluk is a two-player historical battle game with an approximately 240-minute play time, presenting two major engagements from the medieval era: Mansourah and 2nd Homs.
At Mansourah, the Army of the Seventh Crusade, led by King Louis IX, invades Egypt and advances up the Nile. Outside the newly established city of Mansourah, the Crusaders face the Ayyubid Sultanate of Egypt under Emir Fakr-ed-din.
This scenario features three battles of Crusader heavy cavalry, along with crossbows, field artillery, and street fighting. It portrays Louis IX’s second invasion of Egypt and the last-gasp Ayyubid Dynasty’s struggle to stop the advancing army.
2nd Homs brings the Mongols of the Ilkhan Horde, commanded by Mengu Tamar, into a large-scale confrontation with the Mamluks under Sultan Qalawun. Set in Syria on October 29, 1281, this massive, swirling cavalry battle pits two great Eastern armies against each other.
The battle’s size creates a notable command challenge: one wing did not know what was happening on the other wing, a factor that contributed to the Mongol downfall. Players can experience both this clash and the Crusader campaign through the two included scenarios.
