About this board game
The Fellowship of the Ring is a two-player wargame with an approximately 240-minute play time, centered on the action of the first book of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
One player takes the role of the Fellowship, deploying Heroes in an attempt to misdirect and deceive the opposing player. The other player commands Sauron, controlling the evil Nazgûl and the Balrog.
This conflict places the two sides of the story in direct opposition, with the Fellowship relying on its Heroes and Sauron directing powerful forces of evil. The game focuses on the struggle represented in the first book rather than presenting a broader overview of the entire trilogy.
- Fellowship side: Deploy Heroes while attempting to misdirect and deceive Sauron.
- Sauron side: Control the Nazgûl and the Balrog as the forces of evil.
The Fellowship of the Ring takes many of its ideas from the character game in SPI’s War of the Ring and expands upon them. That connection gives the design a clear link to an earlier Tolkien-inspired game while establishing its own focus on the opening book’s events.
Released in 1983, this long-form two-player wargame is built around asymmetric roles, recognizable Tolkien characters and forces, and the tension between concealment and pursuit. It offers a dedicated tabletop interpretation of the Fellowship’s struggle against Sauron, Nazgûl, and the Balrog.
