About this board game

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – Battle in Balin’s Tomb is a two-player game playable in 45 minutes, with one side controlling the Fellowship of the Ring and the other commanding the Goblins of Moria. The game unfolds over 12 rounds.

Each turn begins with the Goblin player drawing the number of Goblin cards specified in the rulebook. The Goblin player then places any additional Goblin reinforcements in the appropriate positions, with the Cave Troll possibly joining the battle as well.

Every Goblin miniature can move and attack, attack and move, or pass. The Goblin player resolves these actions with all of their miniatures. Only after the Goblin forces have finished acting can the Fellowship player activate their characters.

Once all movement and attacks have been completed, the turn ends and the next round begins. This structure keeps the Goblin assault moving first while the Fellowship responds with its surviving characters.

  • 12 rounds of play
  • One player controls the Goblins of Moria
  • One player controls the Fellowship of the Ring
  • Movement, attacks, Goblin cards, and reinforcements
  • A possible Cave Troll appearance

At the end of the twelfth turn, the Fellowship wins if at least three of its characters remain alive, including Frodo. If Frodo has been killed but at least three Fellowship characters are still alive, the result is a tie. The Goblin player wins if fewer than three Fellowship characters remain alive.

With its clear round structure and decisive survival conditions, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – Battle in Balin’s Tomb focuses every activation and attack on the Fellowship’s final outcome.
