About this board game
The Lord of the Rings is a cooperative board game for 2–5 players, with an approximately 90-minute playing time, in which the Fellowship must destroy the One Ring while surviving Sauron’s corrupting influence.
Each player takes the role of one of the Hobbits in the Fellowship, and every Hobbit has a unique power. Together, players travel across four conflict boards inspired by memorable events from the trilogy: Moria, Helm’s Deep, Shelob’s Lair, and Mordor.
At each conflict, the Fellowship plays quest cards to advance along multiple tracks representing fighting, hiding, traveling, and friendship. Matching symbols help the group progress, while careful decisions can lead to powerful runes, legendary cards, and life tokens that help resist corruption.
- Cooperative play for 2–5 players
- Four conflict boards spanning the journey to Mordor
- Unique Hobbit powers and quest-card play
- A corruption track controlled by the advancing Sauron miniature
- The One Ring as a powerful but dangerous tool
The master game board tracks the Fellowship’s physical progress across Middle-earth and the growing threat of Sauron. Safe havens such as Lothlórien can help heal the Hobbits, but these refuges become scarcer as the journey moves deeper into darkness.
Using the One Ring can help the Fellowship hide from danger, yet repeated use draws Sauron’s attention and corrupts the Ring-bearer. If Sauron reaches a Hobbit, that player is eliminated; if the Ring-bearer falls, everyone loses. In The Lord of the Rings, victory comes only when the Fellowship reaches the volcanic fires of Mount Doom and destroys the Ring.
